Another Step in the Right Direction – May 17th Reopening

There’s excitement in the air this week, as another typically ordinary Monday morning has been transformed into a day of celebration for many businesses, generating even more freedom for UK consumers.

Reopening Excitement: UK’s Return to Hospitality & Leisure

Following on from April 12th, this week sees the return of international travel, indoor hospitality (finally!) and indoor entertainment reopen its doors for the first time in months.

At Talon, we’ve been and will continue to monitor, key stats, trends, insights and behaviours, as well as our own Ada mobility data to ensure we are reaching the right audiences in the right locations.


Monday 17th brings us even closer to normality as hospitality reopens indoors across the UK. An estimated 104 million people will return to these venues this week.

Health & Leisure environments 

With the reopening of cinemas and theatres and 38% planning to visit them this month, now is the time to advertise in OOH to reach audiences enjoying these leisure environments.

Retail & Consumer Spending

According to insight from Global, 36% of Londoners are planning to visit a shopping centre over the Spring Bank Holiday alone. Meanwhile, Westfield London has consistently welcomed seven-figure audiences since reopening. OOH within close proximity to stores is perfect for brands looking to target these shoppers.

Public Transport & The Return to Work 

Almost 5 million London Underground journeys were made the week of the May Bank Holiday, with 760k taken on Friday 7th May – the highest daily number in 2021 so far. (source: TFL/Global)

With the May 17th reopenings, we expect to see similar transport usage this week, and certainly continuing to rise in the foreseeable future. Reach predictions remain positive and getting back to previous levels much more quickly than overall audience volumes.

The Return of International Travel

With international travel now permitted, Jet2 saw a 1300% increase in bookings to green listed countries. Airport OOH provides the perfect opportunity for brands to target these holidaymakers.
